Twenty-year-old Henry Lau may not be a name you instantly recognize. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he’s an up and coming star in both the Korean and Chinese music industries as a member of Super Junior-M, the Mando-pop extension of the widely popular Korean boy band, Super Junior.

Henry was discovered when Korean management label, SM Entertainment, held auditions in Toronto. Showcasing the violin and popping, he was featured in Super Junior’s “Don’t Don” music video and on popular variety shows, such as Korea’s “Star King.”

Amidst all this success, how would it feel to be his brother? A-Line got the chance to talk to Henry’s older brother*, a Canadian college student, about Henry’s success.

Before SM…
J.CHAN: It must be thrilling that your brother is becoming a success in Asia.
C.LAU: It’s definitely cool to see Henry have an opportunity to rise to stardom. Before he started out, I did not know anything about SM or the Asian music industry, but I knew he was going somewhere.

J.CHAN: When did he start taking up music?
C.LAU: He started taking piano lessons from my mom at about four and violin lessons at seven. I think he was indifferent towards music up until junior high when his talent for performing started to show.

J.CHAN: As a violinist, I”m pretty envious of Henry’s technique. He must’ve won some awards, right?
C.LAU: On top of local and regional violin solo competitions, he received the Silver Medal for the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada. The Silver Medal is awarded to the soloist who obtained the highest mark in the Level 10 category.

J.CHAN: Maybe I should practice more. Do you think that if Henry were a college student he would continue his passion in music?
C.LAU: Definitely, specifically in music production, jazz, composition or arrangement. As a back-up, he would probably enroll in violin performance.

J.CHAN: Henry was in his final year of high school before auditioning for SM, did he apply to any universities?
C.LAU: After the SM auditions, Henry applied to the University of Toronto for Music Education and actually received two letters of acceptance: one for Music Education and one for Violin Performance. Currently, he’s planning to enroll part-time at Berklee College of Music in Boston during the summer to improve on his music production abilities.

The Audition and More…
J.CHAN: What was Henry’s path once he was recruited by SM Entertainment?
C.LAU: Henry was first engaged as a trainee at SM Entertainment and then debuted four months later with Super Junior-M.

J.CHAN: How did you feel when Henry auditioned for SM?
C.LAU: I didn’t even know that he was auditioning or was serious about it! Henry always did popping and violin performances for school events and had a lot of close Korean friends who danced with him. I suspect that his friends made him aware about the auditions.

J.CHAN: How did your family and friends react to the news?
C.LAU: Everyone was excited to have a potential celebrity family member or friend. A month after the auditions, a Chinese speaker at SM contacted my mother. The company offered our family an all-expense included trip to Korea for us to see the environment that Henry would train in. However, only my mother and Henry were able to go. Upon returning, all doubts were put to rest and my brother had the full support of my mom.

J.CHAN: I find it interesting that Henry, raised as a Chinese-Canadian, entered the Korean music industry. What were your feelings?
C.LAU: Entering the Korean market was an extremely good chance to engage in a culture that he otherwise might not have had the opportunity to. There weren’t any type of prejudice that we held towards the Korean market. We only had positive connotations associated with Korea as we both love Korean food.

Getting a Bit Personal…
J.CHAN: Who are Henry’s music idols?
C.LAU: Especially as he is focused in producing his own music, I feel that he admires the work of J.R. Rotem and Lady Gaga’s producer. I would also think he would like to collaborate with Usher.

J.CHAN: There is always a concern that young celebrities are caught up in the entertainment industry. Do you think fame has gotten to him at all?
C.LAU: I think the fame definitely has taken a toll on him but not in the way you’d expect. Since he’s pretty much always on tour in Asia, he doesn’t have a lot of free time and when he does, he’s usually working on his own music.

J.CHAN: Considering your brother’s success, how many people have gone up to you about him?
C.LAU: Not as many people as most would expect. I do get random Facebook and MSN adds from his fans in Asia, but in person, only friends of friends ask and even then, it is more curiosity.

J.CHAN: Do you usually introduce yourself as Henry’s brother?
C.LAU: I usually don’t. If I do, it’s because I want to find some common ground between a new person I meet, especially if I’m abroad or meet someone from Asia.

J.CHAN: Funny that I’m asking this question, but for A-Line’s female audience, what qualities does Henry like in a girl?
C.LAU: One value that Henry holds highest in girl’s qualities is kindness towards others. He likes girls that are more so than average, kinder towards everyone.

J.CHAN: I’ve always wondered do you ever get jealous of his spotlight?
C.LAU: No. When I see Henry, he’s doing something that’s maximizing his potential and it’s not something that everyone has a chance to do. I also know that our strengths lie in different areas so when I see him in the spotlight, I am excited and proud more than anything else.

Eunhyuk: My valentine’s day this year was very embarrassing. I didn’t notice it was valentine’s day and was alone in the dormitory, so I didn’t recieve anything. My family were expecting me to get piles of chocolates and bring to them to enjoy together. They called me and asked, “Child, have you gotten any chocolates?” I replied, “Yea, I did…… but I distributed to the crew, hehehe”
Leeteuk: My situation was similar. Every year when I go home, fans would follow me, and some would even wait for me at my doorstep. My mum saw that the fans were cold, so she is very caring to them, and even shake their hands. Since fans are getting lesser every year, I told them not follow me anymore.
Eunhyuk: Aish, even parents would be heartbroken seeing this.

100504 Worrying but anticipating comeback

Leeteuk: Superjunior recently had met with some obstacles. Even when we maintain our smiles on the television, we are actually very tired off-screen. Today, our comeback information is finally on the news, but there is only 10 members…… As a leader, seeing the news “officially” out, I still felt depressed even when I already knew of it. Many people said we are nearing the end, but I believe that this is a brand new start.
Eunhyuk: Many people are worried, but to us, this comeback is a huge decision, and though one may feel dissatisfied with only 10 members on stage, and this 4th album only includes 10 members. However, please remember that Superjunior is forever one. Next friday we would be on Music Bank for our comeback stage and would immediately go to KTR for interviews. Everyone, please anticipate and care for us. We had been half-worried and half-anticipating while practising and wanted to present to everybody the result of us practising hard for so long. The previous Taiwan F4’s Vaness Wu specially came to our concert to look for Siwon. Siwon is good in Chinese; English too, both of them talked happily, made me so jealous of him.”

Eunhyuk: “Also want a share.”

Leeteuk: “At the hotel in Taiwan, I was lying down and something big happened. I spilled coke on the blanket as I was covering myself with the blanket and drinking coke. Then I went online to check “blanket” in English, there were a lot of sayings, so I find the easiest and called the Reception and told them “Excuse me, comforter one more please.” But the one they sent up isn’t the blanket that I was using but those that are used in the army, hard ones. I don’t know how to cover using it, so I called again, “Orange color comforter please.’”

Eunhyuk: “Isn’t it easier if you just show them the blanket.”

Leeteuk: “The one that they sent up for the second time is same as the previous one, and then I just raised my soiled blanket to show him, “this this this …… ““

February 24, 2010: Eunhyuk’s Noona that went Nanjing to study

Eunhyuk: “My blood-related noona is flying to China today for overseas studies.”

Leeteuk: “That time when I had a car accident, Eunhyuk, Shindong and I were sent to the hospital. I broke my hip, Eunhyuk is fine and Shindong had an X-ray done. The X-ray showed that Shindong has broken his left arm.

The doctor said, “Shindong! Your arm is broken!”
Shindong replied, “Uh…. I’m fine.”
Then the doctor said, “But the X-ray showed that it’s broken.”

Ryeowook: “Something that I’m still sad about — Leeteuk hyung once got really mad at me.”

Leeteuk: “When? When did I get mad?”

Ryeowook: “That time I was watching a movie, Leeteuk hyung sent me a message “Ryeowook ah, what are you doing?” I didn’t use formalities and replied casually, “Watching a movie.” Then hyung replied, “Hey, why aren’t you using formalities?” I was a little angry at that moment, how can you get angry because I did not speak formalities, as a dongsaeng, can’t I speak casually once a while. ▶Always hard working, but a ‘Cool Guy’ who doesn’t drag on.

It’s his first drama for 3 years ever since ‘the Legend of HyangDan’. He will be acting as ‘picky top star’ Sung MinWoo along with Chaerim, ‘ajumma manager’. He was easily seen on TV as Super Junior’s SiWon for many years, but he couldn’t resist his want to act. In fact, he debuted as an actor before his debut as Super Junior. I told him his filmography is not very much known (even though he acted in ‘18 vs 29’, ‘My Precious Family’, and ‘Drama City – charnel house boy’), he takes it without offense, answering coolly.

“There are pros in many people not knowing my past works. I can be show them better side of myself.”

In fact, he is unusually modest for a celebrity. All the people who know him credits him for his good manners. It’s hard to imagine ‘Good mannered guy’ SiWon falling in love with ajumma manager as ‘picky top star’. Especially it’s his first leading role in a drama. Wouldn’t he be pressured?

“I wanted to challenge the role because it was different from my real self. I like the good mannered image but I don’t like being caged in as one image. To tell you the truth, I don’t feel any pressure.” I told him there is unknown confidence coming from him, he denies it quickly. “If I keep tell myself to do better, I could be over confident. At the start of 2010, he was at 78kg, but he lost 8kg in a week as the result of crude body making for priceless six packs. “The secret? I didn’t eat, but only ran.” He got his perfect body after 3 hours of daily aerobics, and waterless days.

Supports from his family-like SJ members are a big help. Heechul affectionately advised him that ‘since you haven’t been acting for so long, your sense in acting must have gone down, so you have to work hard to get that back.’ Also, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, and Shindong, (TeukAcademy members) have volunteered to be PRing for his drama.

I got curious about his chemistry with Chaerim. “She’s really nice, taking care of me at the studio. I was worried that it might be hard to get along with her, but she came to me, talked to me first. We didn’t know each other before OML, so I was just a fan.”

‘Gentleman Siwon’ was rediscovered in program “Star King” last year. He had over 60 laundry pins on his face, challenging himself for a new record. I asked for his ideal type, he smiled and said there was a same question in the drama. “ ‘What’s your ideal type, Minwoo?’ then I answer. ‘Of course I like pretty women. But as I get older, I like people I can relate to, I can communicate with.’ And that’s really how it is for me in real life.”

He is a guy who would die for his love. Would he really fall in love with a single mom like in OML even in real life? “You probably wouldn’t believe me, but I’m like a ‘ticking bomb’ in a way. I can’t life. I try not to. Age isn’t a factor to me. I don’t care if my girlfriend is 12 years older or more. If I fall in love with her, then age is only a number to me.

TAKE OUT WITH FULL CREDITS AND NO ADDING YOURSELF

Being the korean group with the most number of members, from debut until now, Super Junior has “created many miracles, and will continue creating more miracles”, according to Leeteuk’s words.
Because of the large number of members, the SuJu that have debuted for 4 years have already divided themselves clearly in terms of who is in charge of rapping, singing, dancing etc. As they are getting more successful in the Kpop industry, many of the members have not only done what they are in charge of initially, but tried out on various other fields. But the first dream will always continue, it will not change.
In the MC, variety shows, drama, movies and musical fields, SuJu members have done well. When they are together though, their indentify as a whole is Super Junior. Leeteuk have said during broadcast that they are preparing for 4jib, Eunhyuk also said he wants to create a nice body for 4jib. The members are gearing up, getting ready to make their comeback soon. We anticipate SuJu to appear as a complete group during Super Show 2 in Shanghai on 3rd June.

The new dance student Kyuhyun
The one who has been acknowledged as the best in singing is K.R.Y. The 3 member sub unit have been silently singing behind the scenes* from the start. Besides their singing skills, K.R.Y is constantly venturing into other fields to present their other skills to others.
Having replaced Eunhyuk to be the dancing king of Super Junior once, Kyuhyun’s dancing skills is drawing much attention and being complemented by fans. Dancing Ryeowook

The Yesung with a unique personality and a unique way of making people laugh is always depressed that he has too many parts edited out on shows. Musical king Sungmin
Regardless of acting as a magician, or the guitar prince that make fans go wild, the Sungmin with many abilities keeps giving us different surprises. But this all-round prince is said as “the one with the lowest sense of existence” by Leeteuk on Kiss The Radio, and is even agreed by Eunhyuk. On shows, Sungmin is quieter as compared to the other members. No wonder the rest have been thinking how to boost Sungmin’s “sense of existence.” Another thing worth mentioning is, Sungmin and Yesung acted in musical “Hongildong” which will be shown in Feburary. In an interview during debut times, Leeteuk, Kangin and Shindong used an MC status to introduce themselves to others. From the starting of M!Countdown, to SuJu’s very own Super Show. The MC trio grabbed all the chances there were to accumulate experience, using “I want to be the best MC” as a goal to diligently persevere until now.

All round entertainer Leeteuk
Leader Leeteuk is the most outstanding. Quick reaction, great articulation skills, funny entertaining ability. In every show, he will grab the opportunity to become the MC. Under the lead of this all round entertainer leader, it’s no wonder SuJu is recognised as the entertaining group.

Absolutely great articulation Kangin
Being appointed as the one with most words by other artistes on shows, Kangin is recognised as the one with great articulation in SuJu. The 2009 popular “We Got Married” showed us the always smiling, seemingly heartless guy’s romantic side.

Cute round Shindong
Round round Shindong received a lot of comments about his size from debut until now, tried very hard to diet and had a visible result. But round Shindong is very cute, right? I reckon the one that little kids in “Bobobo” love the most is round Shindong hyung. If asked which MC is most popular among Korean kids, our Shindong would be one of the top. Shindong said on a show once that because there are many members, there are strong debates because of different persectives. Using Heechul’s words to explain, we understand that because these debates exist, SuJu can improve and realise the other fields they excel at.

Asia’s anchovy Eunhyuk
Our anchovy of Asia – Eunhyuk. Naturally, if you want to keep up with the rest, you cannot relax! Ever since he DJ-ed Kiss The Radio with Leeteuk, Eunhyuk seemed to have been influenced a lot by Leeteuk. Although he is SuJu’s dancing machine, or even one of Kpop industry’s top dancing machine, our anchovy of Asia made variety his second field of development. From the time he MC-ed “Exploration of Human Body”, Eunhyuk have always used the anchovy way of making people laugh. For results, just watch Teukigayo and you will know.

Singers? Actors? Entertainers?
Actor Heechul, Siwon and Hankyung
Heechul, Siwon and Kibum are the three who acted first. Kibum”s “Yulin’s growing up diary* Sharp 2″ and Heechul’s “Rainbow Romance”. Both can be considered as the ones with heavy roles. Siwon filmed “A Battle of Wits”. Hankyung, being one of the better dancers, wanted to show his capabilities too. Needless to say about the surprises we received when watching “Stage Of Youth”, even the few seconds of appearing in Zhang Li Yin’s MV with Siwon is acted out with their full potential.

The new appearance of Kibum
Unable to join the group for 3jib, Kibum presented his new work on 21st Feburary. Being limited to outdoors, limited to needing to survive for 3 months on the filming site, Kibum had a better understanding with the other actors and improved his acting skills. When promoting “Jumunjin”, he did not forget the ELFs who have waited very long for him, reassuring that he have never thought of leaving Super Junior”. Actually, in ELF’s heart, as long as you believe actor Kibum is SuJu’s member Kibum, it will be fine.
