Photos courtesy of Universal RecordsFresh, hip and with looks similar to F4 (but cuter!), the Asian boy band fever is becoming alive once again, thanks to this Korean group with a catchy name and a hit single.
And proving that more is indeed merrier, Super Junior, a 13 member boy band (the largest one in the whole world) is fast becoming a sensational hit not just in their home country, but in other parts of Asia such as the Philippines. But their fame doesn’t stop them because they are quickly gaining numerous fans in the United States and one of them is popular blogger, Perez Hilton. It seems that with this male group, language is not a barrier in reaching all corners of the world with their music.
Super Junior originally started as a 12-member group. They were conceptualized* from a Japanese girl group, Morning Musume, whose members would be replaced every year to keep the group young and new (very similar to the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, which spawned Latin pop star Ricky Martin). However, because of their success, the group has since then retained all their original members. They only added the thirteenth member when the creator discovered a phenomenal talent from a singing competition in their hometown back in 2005. Now the members are Leeteuk (who is the leader of the band), Heechul, Hangeng, Yesung, Kang-in, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, RYeowook, Kibum and later, Kyuhyun (who recently got to perform A Whole New World with our very own Charice Pempengco).
The Chinese member, Han Geng, was chosen from auditions held in China by SM Entertainment in 2001. However, to make sure that their number of activities would not be limited because of their size and to prove that the group can adjust to different musical genres, their management has divided them to sub-groups, namely Super Junior-K.R.Y, Super Junior-T, Super Junior-M and Super Junior-Happy.
Super Junior got the name as the word Junior represents the member’s young ages when they first became trainees under the SM Entertainment music label group. The members who more or less were chosen because of their performing experiences, were also trained in other areas of entertainment such as acting and hosting, making the group even more well-rounded. This only meant that they could pretty much do everything in the entertainment industry.
With their highly skilled dance moves and catchy pop tunes, Super Junior’s third album, Sorry Sorry, became the first K-pop release to reach number one position in the album charts of Music One stores in the Philippines, beating the albums of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, and even Lady Gaga. In Korea, their album sold 30,000 copies, making it the biggest first-day sales for the group, tanks to their hit song, Sorry, Sorry.
With all the success that Super Junior has achieved since they started in the music business, it is clear that these hot guys have nothing to be sorry about. They have a hit song, loyal fans, and a career that is only just taking off. It’s clear that they’re here to stay.
